You said something that clicked with me and I used it on the course the next day when I played with Bob in Kelowna and have been using it since. It literally changed my golf game!
Let me tell you what happened to me after I talked to you. You said something that clicked with me and I used it on the course the next day when I played with Bob in Kelowna and have been using it since. It literally changed my golf game!

Let me give you a little background first. I have believed for some time now, a year or so, that any “real” improvement in my game was not going to come from physically hitting more golf balls. I knew that it was going to come from the mental and physical side.  (physical in the sense of core workouts). To that end I had gone out and bought the Rotella CD’s as well as Zen golf and two or three other books  whose names escape me at the moment. I also bought a CD and a couple of books on Core workouts. I have been working on both those things for awhile.

I bring this up just to give you some quick background on where my head was when you said something to me that absolutely changed my golf game. (I am reminded of the old saying, “when the student is ready the teacher will appear.”) I do not know if it would have had the impact it had if I was not already on the bandwagon, so to speak.

Okay, here is what you said. After you hit each shot rate yourself, I think you said from one to five, on how well you concentrated. I had always rated my shot on the result of the shot, accounting for those exceptions when you two groove one to three feet. I never looked at or focused on, pardon the pun, my focus on each shot. When I went to focusing on how well I was focusing I started striping it.

That day I played, I made a double and a bogey on the front and shot 1 under. On the back I had 7 birdies and one eagle putt. Had I putted well, I would have shot 65. I didn’t hit it quite as well the next day, I was fighting my swing a bit and shot 74. The day after that  was the same thing, fought my swing and did not putt and shot 75.

When I got home I played with my buddies and again, if I could putt I would be shooting high 60’s low 70’s.

The only difference being that when I play now I only focus on how I am concentrating.

Anyway, just wanted to let you know that.

I Shot An 83 Today! That’s My Best Score of the Season.
I played my first game after reading your book and shot an 83 at the Kelowna Golf and Country Club.  I have an 18 handicap and have not broken 90 this season until today.  I have been as low as 15 but have been frustrated with my game recently and my handicap had risen to 18.

My main goal today was to focus on the shot before, during, and after. That was basically what helped my game, I had 8 one putts and 2 birdies, and several putts for par. All my shots were on the fairway and claser than ever to the target I focussed on. My golf buddies today were amazed when I told them about your book. I am a firm believer in the Law of Attractio and Michael’s work, so your book made a lot of sense to me. I look forward to putting more of your suggestions into practice and I have signed up online for the e-book and audios.

Or, perhaps well before a round has started you already start to worry about the results and what you are going to end up shooting in your upcoming round AND what your friends are going to think of you. When you are in the process of worrying, your mind is actually creating negative thoughts and images. If fact, when you are worrying you are actually visualizing the results you don’t want.

Article Number Four: Shoot Lower Golf Scores Using Creative Visualization

In her book Creative Visualization, Shakti Gawain states, “Creative visualization is the technique of using your imagination to create what you want in your life.”

Shakti’s book is a great resource for learning about using creative visualization, and many of the techniques and concepts she teaches in the book can be directly applied to golf.

Creative visualization can be used to create the results that you want, but what some people don’t know is that by using creative visualization you can create the results that you don’t want. For instance, you may have experienced at some point in your golfing career, just standing over the ball and starting to worry about hitting your next shot into the water.  Or, perhaps well before a round has started you already start to worry about the results and what you are going to end up shooting in your upcoming round AND what your friends are going to think of you. When you are in the process of worrying, your mind is actually creating negative thoughts and images. If fact, when you are worrying you are actually visualizing the results you don’t want.

By understanding exactly how creative visualization works we can begin to more effectively use our ability to visualize to achieve better results in our golf game.

Using Creative Visualization You Can:

  • Improve your driving distance
  • Learn to increase your focus
  • Practice your golf game away from the golf course
  • And much more


Science is now showing proof that when you are in the process of visualizing you will fire off the same neurons in your brain that you would if you were actually doing the activity. What this means is you can actually improve your golf game without actually practicing at the driving range or golf course, but rather by just using visualization.

Allow me to share with you one of the techniques that I share with many of my clients. I learned this technique from an old golf coach of mine Rob Anderson. This technique has helped me in many occasions and was truly instrumentally in helping me to shoot my lowest tournament score … which happens to be a 68!
Visualizing a Perfect Round of Golf

Many golfers complain about not having enough time to play golf. Well, by using visualization you can play as many rounds of golf, and hit as many shots as you want, from anywhere in the world! Let me show you how to experience your perfect round of golf over and over again.

The Helicopter Visualization

Before you even step onto the golf course, you are going to do what top professionals do. You are going to have a good, long hard look at the golf course you’ll be playing on, and visualize yourself playing a perfect round of golf. When you are in a deeply relaxed state, start to create a vision of yourself flying above the first tee in a helicopter. It hovers just above the ground and you see every detail of the golf course vividly. Enjoy the view. Remind yourself how much you love playing golf. Look down and see yourself playing the course you want to be playing. Watch yourself hit each shot in perfect form and see the ball land perfectly at your target. Watch yourself play each hole over and over again, until you feel confident you can shoot the score you want to shoot on that hole. Fly over each hole, one by one, as many times as you want. You love golfing. Feel your joy. Picture every detail. Do this for as long as you want. Feel your confidence grow as this golf course becomes more and more familiar to you.

Next, you are going to play the best golf of your life from within your own body.

The Body Visualization

Begin with the same relaxation process as before. This time you are inside your body and you experience your entire round of golf as if you were actually playing. While you let yourself sink further into the moment, focus on the feelings you are having and continue to create images as detailed as you possibly can. Who are you playing with? What are you wearing? What is the weather like? How does your body feel? What do you smell? What do you hear? Can you feel the breeze or the sun’s warmth on your arms? Look at your feet. Look at the club in your hands.

Stay focused. Visualize playing one hole at a time. Your swing is perfect. You accurately place the ball in the perfect spot; you putt effortlessly, and hole after hole you continue to play like you’ve always dreamed.

Pay attention to what you are feeling. The more emotion you can add to this visualization, the stronger it will imprint your subconscious mind.

Tips to Maximize Your Visualization Session

As you are going through any visualization process, you may notice that some images are bright and very close, or dark and far away. Allow yourself to experiment by moving these images around and changing the brightness of them until they feel just right for you. You may find that when you are visualizing a certain scenario and some doubt creeps up in your mind, or even a fear of some kind, the image may move a certain distance away from you and become less bright. Just say, “Clear” and switch back to an image that leaves you feeling good.

Here are some tips and things to keep in mind when you are going through the visualization process:

  • Visualize using all your senses (feel the air, smell the grass etc).
  • Try to visualize down to the smallest of details:
  • What club are you using?
  • What’s the exact yardage to the pin?
  • How is the grass cut?
  • How are you swinging the club?
  • Is there any break in your putt?


After you hit the ball, continue to focus only on where you want the ball to go. Push your comfort zone. Hit the ball farther, sink more putts, hit better shots, and shoot lower scores than you ever thought possible.

This is just a small overview of the importance of creative visualization and how you can start implementing it into your game. For more information on visualization and other Inner Game techniques, refer to the websites I’ve provided before for you.

How To Start Your Season Off Shooting Low Scores

I’m making the assumption that if you are reading this article then you are a serious golfer. Now that doesn’t mean that you play golf all of the time, or that you are able to shoot really low scores. It just means that when you do play golf you take the game seriously and you’re consciously working towards lowering your handicap.

My observation of working with golfers of all skill levels is that MOST golfers don’t help themselves shoot lower scores. Okay, let me explain. Have you ever played with a golfer that shot in the 90’s on the back tees, and you thought to yourself, “Why doesn’t he or she get the same scores from the middle tees?”

Well, I’m going to ask you the same question. Unless you are shooting in the low 60’s from the front tees on a consistent basis, you should start giving the front tee’s only a try for the first few rounds of the season. Now, I understand you might be thinking that I’m crazy and that you’d never do that, but just read on to learn why I’m making this suggestion.

I’ve observed that most golfers are playing from tee’s that are too difficult for them to shoot low scores. This doesn’t mean they can’t play from the tee’s they are playing from, but it does mean that they can’t shoot low scores from certain tees. I want to share with you a secret about playing from the front tees that may absolutely change your perspective about playing from them, and could forever change the results you are able to achieve on the golf course.

When you create any results in your golf game (whether it’s shooting in the 60’s or in the 90’s) you start to reinforce a certain pattern of thinking. After you reinforce this pattern enough times then it becomes increasingly more difficult to break that pattern of thinking. You see, when you’re shooting in the 90’s from the back tees at the start of the season then you start to believe and reflect upon how great you are on the back tees. Furthermore, you start to constantly think about shooting in the 90’s and those thoughts will eventually become comforting for you.

When you become comfortable with certain results that you are achieving in your golf game, you’re creating a pattern of thinking that is very difficult to change. This is precisely why it takes lots of time (sometimes even months) to start lowering your scores at the start of the season.

The Secret to Lowering Your Handicap
Start the year off playing from the front tees. Get used to shooting low scores, and start to imbed thoughts of playing great golf and shooting low scores in your mind. When you’re confident that you can move back to a more advanced set of tees and achieve the same scores, only then should you move back. You’ll notice that you’re now so comfortable shooting low scores; you’ll mentally find a way to continue this practice.

Throughout the season continue moving back as you become comfortable shooting the same low scores that you started off the year shooting. Doing this will help you increase your enjoyment of the game, develop much more confidence in your abilities to play great golf, and it will ultimately help you train your mind to shoot lower scores.

I encourage you to stop doing what so many golfers do, which is to start the season off on tee’s that are too difficult for their current playing abilities. Then they go a step further by trying to move right back to the champion tee’s right when they are just starting to lower their scores. This is upsetting to watch and I hope that you don’t follow this negative pattern of behavior. I just recently had a client of mine call me and share with me that she had shot a score of 66! It was her lowest ALL TIME score, and when she mentioned to me that it was from the front tee’s we both said, “WHO CARES?!” We were excited, happy, and driven towards making those scores a common experience for her. My hope is that you will have the same experience as she had through following my advice in this column.

How Words and Phrases Affect the Results I Create

Your words create thoughts, and a thought is simply a grouping of words also known as “a phrase.” Your thoughts create feelings you have in your body, and these feelings send out a vibration, which causes you to attract either a positive or negative result in your golf game.

Here’s a simple equation to show you how your thoughts, however fleeting, can affect your game:

1. Positive Words = Positive Thoughts = Positive Feelings = Positive Results
2. Negative Words = Negative Thoughts = Negative Feelings = Negative Results

See how they’re all linked together in producing either positive or negative results? The words that you use are always going to be reflecting the way that you play and the results you are getting. This is why it is so important to only use positive words that are going to empower you to create the results that you want in your golf game.

There are three words that you must eliminate from your game right now! These three words are DON’T, NOT and NO! The reason that you must ban these words from your mind is that when you use these three words, you are actually bringing attention, energy, and focus to the very thing you were trying to avoid in the first place – a highly negative game.

For instance, when I say, “Don’t think about hitting the ball in the water,” well, we both know that you immediately thought about slicing your ball into the water hazard. Here are some common phrases that I often hear golfers using on the golf course or driving range:

NO more bogies!”
DON’T hit it in the water!”
“I am NOT going to make another bogie!”
NO more shanks or sculls!”

Your words program the way that you think and they also determine what your brain is focused on at any given time. That’s why it’s so important to be conscious of what you are saying as well as what you are thinking.

Eliminating Negative Words and Phrases Exercise

Take out a piece of paper and draw a line down the center of the page. On the left side, write all of the words and phrases you no longer want in your game, and on the right side list all of the words that you do want to be using. Do the same thing for phrases that you are constantly using in your golf game. HINT: eliminate words and phrases that cause you to focus on what you don’t want, or cause you to become or feel negative.
The first step in changing the words and the phrases that you are using while playing golf is to become aware of the words and phrases that you should and shouldn’t be using.
Write out the words and phrases that you should be using onto an index card. Carry the card in your bag and constantly be checking yourself to make sure you are using only the words and phrases you should be using.

By changing a few simple words to create more positive thoughts, you will notice that over a short period of time, your golf score should improve. Remember: just by eliminating don’t, not and no from your vocabulary, you’re focusing on achieving more positive results through the use of your more powerful positive words.
